John joined chambers following successful completion of his pupillage in April 2018. John enjoys an extensive oral and written practice encompassing all aspects of civil and family law.

John previously served as an engineer in the Royal Navy where he gained graduate and postgraduate science and engineering qualifications and became professionally registered as an Incorporated Engineer.

John converted to law in 2014 and gained a distinction for his Graduate Diploma in Law before going on to complete BPTC in 2016. He continued to study part-time throughout pupillage and is in the latter stages of the LPC MSc in Law, Business and Management.

His continuing studies have not only augmented his considerable legal knowledge and skills but also helped to consolidate many aspects of his practical training during pupillage. It also helped to provide with a unique insight into the business needs and practices of his instructing solicitors.

Before attaining pupillage, John worked as a solicitor’s agent appearing regularly in commercial, personal injury and housing matters.

Family: Care & Children

John has appeared in many private law children matters and has been instructed at all stages of private children disputes including at fact finding hearings. He is particularly adept at representing military clients and their families due his significant insight into the exigencies of service life.

He has significant experience in domestic violence and injunction matters under Part IV of the Family Law Act 1996 and having previously volunteered for the National Centre for Domestic Violence knows how to deal sensitively with vulnerable clients. He accepts instruction in both a without notice and on-notice applications.

John also accepts instructions in Care Proceedings and has represented parents in contested hearings.


Contact and Residence disputes under the Children Act 1989

John has appeared in many private law children matters and has been instructed at all stages of private children disputes including at fact finding hearings. He acts in all types of residence and contact cases together with cases involving removal from the jurisdiction, specific issue orders and prohibited steps orders. He is fully cognisant of the need to manage expectations in emotionally charged and fractious situations and has been trained to seek to find a pragmatic and workable solution in all cases. John is naturally conciliatory and innately empathetic. As a result, he is often able to  help clients to recognise the best way forward and to reach the best outcomes. John also accepts instructions in Care Proceedings and has represented parents in contested hearings. As pupil to Ian Wheaton and Tracey Hennessey, John gained significant exposure to all aspects of public law children proceedings and is keen to expand her family law practice in this area.


Family: Finance

John has accepted instructions to appear in all stages of proceedings for financial remedies including at final hearings. He also takes instruction in other ancillary applications relating to divorce and financial relief. His military background provides him with an extensive understanding of the financial aspects of military life. John is comfortable with enforcement of financial orders for both respondents and applicants. He also has good experience of cross-over work including insolvency, commercial or familial intervening within proceedings. John enjoys the cut and thrust of advising and representing former marital partners in financial order proceedings and cohabitants in disputes under TLATA and also has experience of advising family members, dependants, former marital partners and cohabitants in actions concerning the administration of estates.


Chancery and Commercial

John has wide experience in a wide range of civil private nuisance claims, road traffic disputes, credit hire claims and personal injury matters, including infant settlement approvals and MOJ Stage 3 hearings. John has also been instructed in numerous contractual disputes; and in particular, commercial disputes and matters of contractual construction. 


Commercial Chancery

John has appeared in County Courts across the Western and South Eastern Circuits in mortgage repossessions, mortgage applications, private, social housing and commercial landlord and tenant disputes, trespassing matters, LPA receiver’s applications, applications for orders of sale hearings and applications in contemplation of forfeiture of a lease. He also has advised in relation to proceedings under the Companies Act 2006.


Insolvency and liquidation

Prior to pupillage John dealt with applications in bankruptcy including applications to set aside statutory demands, applications to annul and applications for sale of property by trustees.


Personal Injury & Clinical Negligence

John  has extensive experience in Personal injury matters  (road traffic accidents, public and employers’ liability claims), fatal accidents, product liability and clinical negligence claims (for both claimants and defendants)  and accepts instructions at all stages of claim from initial liability and Quantum assessments to trial,  whether the matter be allocated in  the small claims , fast or multi track.


Employment & Discrimination

John represents and advises both employees and employers in contentious and non-contentious work at all stages in employment proceedings.

John also accepts instructions in employment matters issued in the civil courts and has a particular interest in restrictive covenant disputes.
