Divorce and Financial remedy online: Factsheet published

HM Courts and Tribunal Service has published an updated factsheet explaining the Divorce and Financial remedy online service. The factsheet has been updated to meet the requirements of the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 which came into force on 6 April 2022.

The factsheet notes that in its first month, the online divorce service:

  • received 13,000 applications from couples apply to end their marriage

    • received 2,771 joint applications for divorce

    • received 10,207 sole applications.

The new online divorce service allows couples to apply for joint divorce and includes a new lead applicant for the process. The service gives divorcing couples control over the process and builds in time for reflection and future planning.

During Autumn 2022, the service will begin to issue its first final orders to confirm the end of marriages under the new act. It is hoped that at this point people will feel that the new service has helped to make the journey to divorce smoother and more amicable.

By the end of 2022 the online divorce service will have issued its first final orders to confirm the end of marriages and civil partnerships.
